John WysockiLevel 1 Coach | CrossFit Kids | Co-Founder
John Wysocki (aka The Chief) has been involved with CrossFit since June 2009 while serving on active military duty with the US Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal Training Unit Two in Fort Story, VA. John began training friends and neighbors out of his garage gym and started CrossFit Newark with Mike Bolte in the fall of 2013. He has earned his CrossFit Level 1 trainer and CrossFit Kids trainer certifications and enjoys coaching students of all ages and abilities, especially those who are “differently-abled”. He is currently the Director of Coaches Education and Sports Resources for Special Olympics Ohio. John served over 13 years with the US Navy and was a Chief Petty Officer-Intelligence Specialist in the US Navy, served twice in Afghanistan and was awarded The Bronze Star medal for his combat service in 2007-2008. He is a 1995 graduate of The Ohio State University and currently serves as the General Manager and Staff Coach for CrossFit Newark. John lives in Newark with his wife Carrie and their three daughters Natalie, Julia, and Gabby.

Master Programmer - Director of Sport
Mike Bolte found CrossFit in 2006 while looking for a new program to prepare him for the challenges he faces daily in his career as a firefighter/paramedic with the Newark Fire Division, where he is a Captain. With no facilities in Licking County at the time Mike began training out of his garage. The benefits of CrossFit’s methodology quickly became apparent, and Mike began recruiting friends and family as training partners. As his passion grew around CrossFit so did his number of training partners, and the demand for a coach, so Mike became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. Mike has competed in and won local fitness competitions, and his garage gym was featured on CrossFit.com. He is CrossFit Newark’s Director of Sport/Programming, and is looking forward to helping others on their CrossFit journey. Mike is a graduate of Hocking College where he studied Fire and Emergency Services. He is a Certified IAFF/IAFC Peer Fitness Trainer, and developed Newark Fire Division’s fitness program. Mike resides with his wife Devon and their four children, in Newark.
Brian HoweLevel 1 Coach
Coach Brian “Howie” Howe was introduced into CrossFit in March of 2008 by Mike Bolte and began training out of his garage. He quickly discovered the benefits of CrossFit and has been using it to meet the physical demands of being a Firefighter and Paramedic. Brian grew up in Newark and played numerous sports throughout high school including football, running cross country, and wrestling. CrossFit helped bring back the competitive spirit those sports first brought him. Brian enjoys the CrossFit Newark community of athletes and the challenge of helping them move more safely, effectively, and efficiently. Coach Howie is the Box Mobility guru and is known as The Silver Ninja. He is a graduate of C.O.T.C. where he studied EMS technologies. Brian resides with his two daughters in Glenford.
Ian HuprichLevel 1 Coach
Football Team Conditioning Program Manager
Ian Huprich found CrossFit in 2013 while looking for a new way to prepare him for the challenges he faced on the football field. He found Mike through his cousin and started training out of his garage with Mike and within a week was hooked. The benefits from CrossFit quickly outweighed any of the athletic training he had done before. His skills improved on and off the field and the desire to grow in CrossFit continued after his sports career came to a close. Ian’s passion to help others and grow in the sport of CrossFit ultimately drove him to become CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. He is looking forward to help improve others lives on their CrossFit journey. Coach Ian is the primary contact for all athletic team challenge CrossFit camps and programming. Ian is currently enrolled at Central Ohio Technical College where he majors in nursing. Ian resides with his cat, Sadie, in Granville, Ohio.
Chris CampbellLevel 1 Coach
Speed Agility Motor (S.A.M.) Coach
Chris Campbell discovered CrossFit in July of 2013 after John invited him to a workout in his garage. After playing football in college, Chris tried various gyms and at home workouts, but he soon found himself losing interest and giving up on whatever program he was doing. He was looking for something different that challenged him physically and mentally,but also helped him achieve his goal of living a healthier lifestyle.
CrossFit Newark opened their doors in January of 2014 and it provided everything that he had been looking for; a constantly changing workout to keep his interest while being supported & held accountable to achieve his goals by their awesome trainers and community. After 6 months of being a part of the CrossFit Newark community, his wife Krysta wanted to see what all the fuss was about, now she is an avid CrossFitter as well. Chris became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in April of 2015 and is primarily involved in the Teen Program. In addition to coaching CrossFit, Chris started coaching the Licking County Special Olympics Power Lifting team in 2014 and is now the Head Coach and has been a football coach for Ashland University and Newark High School. He is currently an intervention teacher at Heritage Middle School. He and Krysta reside in Newark with their two boys Cooper and Coen.
Tom PellettLevel 1 Coach
Speed Agility Motor (S.A.M.) Coach
Tom Pellett is a former 3 sport athlete at Newark Catholic High School. In college Tom became a diver for the University of Mount Union Swim Team and lettered two years as a collegiate diver. After ventures in action sports and getting his bachelors degree from the University of Mount Union, Tom taught as a physical education teacher at Excel Academy in Newark. During this time he met his, now wife, Hannah whom was doing Crossfit. After hearing about it from her and seeing a flyer at his new job at the Licking county Board of Developmental Disabilities Tom Joined Crossfit Newark. At first this was to improve his physical ability to ride his bicycle but after a few weeks of seeing what Crossfit is and how it had already started to improve his quality of life, Tom was hooked. In April of 2015 Tom received his level 1 certification. Tom will also do a backflip if you request him to.
Nick WatlingLevel 1 Coach
Firefighter Physical Fitness Programs Instructor
Nick Watling started doing CrossFit on his own in 2009. Nick started CrossFit as training for the Fire Fighter Combat Challenge. It did not take long for Nick to see the benefits of CrossFit in his daily life as a fire fighter/paramedic. Crossfit quickly became an obsession and a way of life. Nick is a full time fire fighter/paramedic at West Licking Fire and a Captain at Newton Township Fire Department. Nick grew up in the Hebron/Newark area. In his spare time he enjoys softball, coaching his sons in hockey and baseball, and spending time with family and friends. Nick resides in Newark with his wife Misty and their 2 sons.
Liz ScarberryLevel 1 Coach
Elements Onboarding Specialist
Liz found CrossFit in the fall of 2013. As someone who had never previously played sports she was very surprised at how much she loved the challenge of CrossFit. She obtained her Level 1 certificate in August of 2015 and began coaching at Rain City CrossFit in Bremerton, Washington. Shortly after she moved to Newark, Ohio and joined CrossFit Newark. She began volunteering with adaptive CrossFit and was brought on staff in April 2016. She is currently teaching pre-kindergarten in New Albany and working towards finishing her degree in psychology. In her spare time she enjoys collecting unicorns, drawing rainbows and flipping the tire shown in the photo above.
Kenzie EganLevel 1 Coach
Volleyball Conditioning Program Director
Kenzie’s love for CrossFit began not long after graduating from Wright State University in 2013. After competing as a defensive specialist for WSU volleyball, she was looking for a workout that could still push her limits mentally and physically. When she finished her first WOD of burpees and sprints at CrossFit Newark, she knew that CrossFit could provide the solution. Kenzie began competing as a CrossFit athlete, then moved to Atlanta and continued her CrossFit journey there until she accepted a position in exercise therapy at Bafford Spine and Rehabilitation in Newark. When she is not working or coaching, she enjoys playing volleyball along with any sport which provides a challenge. Kenzie is our newest coach and CFN staff member and is very excited to be part of the team and help our members achieve their fitness goals.
